Abstract
This study aims to analyze the intrinsic and extrinsic elements in the film Purusa: The Wedding Sacred, analyze the portrayal of social phenomena contained in the film, and analyze the meaning and contribution of the film to the discourse on gender equality. This study employs a qualitative research approach focusing on documentation study as the primary data collection technique for analyzing the film. In addition, this study focuses on the film Purusa: The Wedding Sacred. The data analysis employs textual analysis and Roland Barthes' distinctive semiotics. The findings indicate that the intrinsic and extrinsic elements in the film represent the conflicts faced by Balinese women in confronting customary systems, including lineage, marriage, and honor. The film also positions women as subordinated parties as a result of social and cultural constructions, thereby giving rise to a critical medium concerning the importance of gender equality discourse. This study focuses on examining the intrinsic and extrinsic elements in the film, analyzing the portrayal of social phenomena contained in Purusa: The Wedding Sacred, and analyzing the meaning and contribution of the film to the discourse on gender equality. The contribution of this study focuses on the sociology of gender and critical film analysis as a medium capable of articulating the needs of groups considered marginalized and of creating opportunities for more symmetrical forms of life.
