Abstract
This study examines the socio-economic impacts of tourism on local farmers in the Subak Jatiluwih area, a UNESCO World Heritage cultural landscape grounded in the Tri Hita Karana philosophy. Using a qualitative case-study approach, the research was conducted in Jatiluwih Village, Tabanan, Bali, involving 30 local farmers selected through incidental sampling and interviewed using semi-structured interviews. The data were analyzed through data condensation, data display, and conclusion drawing and verification. The findings show that tourism generates positive impacts through financial support, agricultural assistance, and supplementary employment opportunities. However, it also produces negative consequences, including changes in community social structure, shortages of agricultural labour, and declining interest among younger generations in farming. The study is limited to the perspectives of 30 local farmers within a single Subak area. Nevertheless, the findings provide evidence for local policy and destination management aimed at balancing tourism benefits with agricultural and cultural-landscape conservation. By foregrounding farmers as key actors sustaining the Subak system, this study highlights their direct socio-economic experiences within a tourism-intensive heritage landscape.
